Soccer balls from 50 years ago looked different from those we use today.
First, they were made from fewer pices of material.
Back then they were made of eight to ten pieces stitched together with thick string.
Today, most soccer balls are made of 32 pieces sewn together with 642 stitches.

Today, we generally use man-made materials.
FIFA, which organizes World Cup events, tests new soccer balls made by certain companies, like Nike and Adidas.
The FIFA test is very strict; more than 70% of the balls tesred do not pass!
It measures thinds like shape, weight, pressure, and wate-resistance.
There are many parts to the test, but one part is especially hard.
Each ball is shot from a machine at 50km/h toward a steel wall - two thousand times!
Many balls break apart during this part of the test.
Interestingly, soccer balls in the future may look more like those from long ago.
It is not by reurning to leather.
Leather will never again be popular for making soccer balls because it is very easy for water to soak through the inside of the ball.
Rather, sports companies are again making balls from six to twelve pieces of material.
Why? The answer is water.
Water is still one of the main reasons that soccer balls fail the FIFA test.
Scientists think that fewer pieces of material will mean fewer stithes, and therefore fewer places for water to enter the ball.
So, the soccer ball that your children play with may look similar to the one your grandparents kicked around.
