The struggles of South Korea’s national football team over the past year were reflected in the nominations for the Asia Football Confederation’s (AFC) annual awards as only club sides and the women’s team were picked as candidates for the continent’s top honors.
The AFC on Wednesday announced three candidates each for nine categories with the Songnam Chunma and the team’s manager Cha Kyung-bok alongside women’s national team nominated each for best club, manager and women’s team of the year.
Last year, South Korea swept the main awards on the back of the national team’s surprising run to the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup. Former national team head coach Guus Hiddink and the team itself picked up awards, while Lee Chun-soo was named Young Player of the Year.
Cha led the Chunma to a third straight K-League title while the women’s national team qualified to the World Cup finals for the first time, after beating Japan 1-0 in the AFC Women’s Championship third-place match in June.
Cha’s rivals are North Korean supremo Ri Song-gun and Iranian team Sepahan’s Farhad Kazemi while China and North Korea are also vying for the women’s best team accolade.
Mehdi Mahdavikia of Iran, Maksim Shatskikh of Uzbekistan and Therdsak Chaiman of Thailand were tapped as candidates for Player of the Year.
North Korea’s goal machine Ri Kum-suk, who scored 15 goals in the World Cup qualifiers, will compete with Japan’s Mio Otani and Bai Jie of China for the Women’s Player of the Year prize.
In the National Team of the Year competition, Oman was selected together with Iraq and Kuwait, after beating South Korea 3-1 to top Group E in the Asian Cup qualifiers last month.
The awards will be handed out on Dec. 10 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
