He excused himself with a strained smile and hurried over to Martha. "What's the problem?"

그는 애써 웃으며 양해를 구하고 마사에게 서둘러 갔다. "무슨 문제야?"

"I don't know," Martha said breathlessly, "the register just stopped working."

"모르겠어요," 마사가 헐떡이면서 말했다, "등록기가 작동을 안 해요."

John stared in frustration at the silent machine; he didn't have a clue about how to get it working again. "What did you do?" he barked at Martha.

존은 움직임 없는 기계를 짜증 가득한 눈으로 노려봤다; 그는 다시 작동 시키는 방법을 아예 몰랐다. "도대체 뭐 한거야?" 그는 마사에게 화를 냈다.

"I didn't do anything!" Martha wailed. "It's not my fault."

"전 아무것도 안 했어요!" 마사는 울먹이며 말했다. "제 탓 아니에요."

"It's not my fault either," John snapped. "Damn it, think! Did you do something just before it quit?"

"내 탓도 아니거든," 존은 따졌다. "제기랄, 생각해봐! 망가지기 전에 뭐 했어?"

"Hey!" one of the guests back in the middle of the line called up to John, "I had to wait for my food, wait for my check, and now I have to wait to give you my money? Come on, do something!"

"저기요!" 줄 중간에 서있던 손님이 존을 불렀다, "음식 받을때도 기다리고, 계산서 받으려고 또 기다리고, 이젠 돈 주는데 기다려야 합니까? 빨리 어떻게 좀 해봐요!"

"I'm trying to do something, sir," John said through clenched teeth.

"제가 어떻게든 해보려고 하고 있습니다 손님," 존은 이를 악물고 말했다.

"Well, do it now, 'cause I'm tired of this crap." There was a murmur of agreement from the other guests in line.

"지금 해봐요 지금, 이제 나도 지쳤으니까." 이 말에 같이 서있던 손님들의 동감을 표하는 수군거림이 일었다. 

John grabbed Martha by the arm much harder than he intended and half shoved her toward the kitchen. "Go to my office and get my calculator."

존은 의도한것 보다 쌔게 마사의 팔을 잡고 거의 밀치는 듯이 그녀를 부엌으로 떠밀었다. "내 사무실에서 내 계산기 가져와."

Martha pulled her arm away. "I don't know where it is."

마사는 팔을 빼냈다. "어디에 있는지 모르는데요."

John slammed his fist down on the counter. "Damn it, do I have to do everything myself?!" he shrieked.

존은 주먹을 카운터에 쾅 내려 쳤다. "제기랄, 내가 일일이 다 해야 되는거야?!" 존이 꽥 소리를 질렀다.

A hush fell over the restaurant. Everyone froze; all eyes turned toward John. Martha blinked back tears and was starting to say something when her gaze shifted past John's shoulder and her eyes widened. John turned around to see his boss, Alan, looking around the restaurant incredulously. "What in hell is going on here?" he demanded.

Alan looked across his desk at John and sighed. What could have gone so wrong? This morning's incident was just the latest in a series of problems he'd had with John ever since John took the dining room supervisor's job. John didn't seem to understand budgets and was not keeping up with the administrative part of the job - late reports, botched purchase orders, unsigned invoices - the list was rather lengthy. John didn't even seem to be handling the people-skills part of his job very well. Several employees had come to Alan with complaints that John was playing favorites when it came to scheduling. And grabbing Martha this morning - Alan just hoped she didn't cause the hotel any headaches over that.

알란은 책상 너머에 앉아있는 존을 보고 한숨을 쉬었다. 어떻게 일이 이렇게 꼬일수가 있었을까? 오늘 아침의 사건은 존이 다이닝 룸의 관리자가 된 후부터 생긴 많은 문제들의 일부분일 뿐이었다. 존은 예산에 대해 이해도 못 했고 관리자로서의 일도 잘 처리를 못 하고 있었다 - 꾸준히 늦는 보고서, 엉망인 구입 주문들, 서명이 없는 송장들 - 이런 문제들이 끊임없었다. 사람 대하는 부분들도 존은 잘 하지 못하는 듯 했다. 일정 관리 할때 편애한다고 항의하러 알란을 찾아온 직원들이 몇명이나 있었다. 게다가 오늘 아침에 마사를 그렇게 잡고 - 알란은 그저 마사가 그걸로 호텔에 문제삼지 않기만을 바랬다. 

It had taken a while, but Alan had gotten Hummingbirds under control again with the help of George, the coffee shop manager. After the crisis was past, Alan had left George in charge of the restaurant and had taken John up to his office for a long-overdue counseling session. But now he wasn't sure where to begin. 

조금 걸렸었지만, 알란은 카페 매니저인 조지의 도움과 함께 허밍버드들을 겨우 통제를 했었다. 사건이 해결되고 알란은 조지에게 레스토랑을 잠시 맡기고 존과 한참 늦은 상담 시간을 갖기 위해 자신의 사무실로 데리고 올라왔었다. 그러나 알란은 어디서부터 시작을 해야 할지 몰랐다. 

"John," he said finally, "what happened? I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you ranting and raving in front of a room full of guests."

"Look," John said defensively, "I had my hands full. You weren't around, we were working short-handed, the register went dead - I didn't know what to do. I was doing the best I could. I was never trained for that kind of situation."

"그게," 존은 방어적으로 대답했다, "할 일이 너무 많았어요. 알란씨도 주변에 없었고, 일손도 부족했고, 등록기도 망가졌고 - 제가 그 상황에서 뭘 어떻게 합니까. 전 최선을 다 했어요. 그런 상황을 위한 훈련도 안 받았고요."

"But John, you had training. You spent a week with Phil; he said you were ready. You worked in the restaurant for two years. I don't know what else we could have done for you."

"근데 존, 자네 교육 받았었잖아. 필이랑 일주일 붙어있었어; 너 준비 됬다고 필이 말도 했었어. 그리고 자네 이 레스토랑에서 2년이나 일 했잖아. 뭘 더 어떻게 해줬어야 하는지 모르겠다."

"You never prepared me for an emergency like that."

"그런 비상상황에는 준비 시켜주지 않았어요."

"But no one could have foreseen what happened this morning!" Alan exclaimed. "Besides, managers are supposed to be able to cope with all the crazy things that go wrong. That's why we put you in that position; we thought you could handle it."

"아니 오늘 아침 같은 일을 누가 예측해!" 알란이 소리쳤다. "게다가, 원래 매니저들은 그런 정신없는 일들도 다 잘 대처해야 되는거야. 그래서 우리가 널 그 역할을 맡긴거고; 우린 네가 그런 일을 잘 해낼수 있을거라 생각했지."

"Well, maybe you were wrong," John blurted out, "maybe you shouldn't have promoted me in the first place." John looked down at his feet and mumbled, "I never wanted to be a supervisor anyway."

"뭐, 판단이 틀리셨나보죠," 존이 말을 내뱉었다, "애초부터 절 승진시키지 마셨어야 했나보죠." 존은 그의 발끝만 바라 보며 중얼거렸다, " 어차피 관리자 되기 바란것도 아닌데."
