LOUIS VUITTON AND THE CONQUEST OF THE SKIES
Georges vuitton and his experienced birth of aviation firsthand,
inventing both luggage for air and flying machines for pioneers of the skies.
Louis Vitton's son Georges was enthralled after reading the jules Verne Around the World in 80 Days and developed a passion for "aerostations".
He designed on "Aero trunk", a nacelle flanked by two solid trunks that would keep if afloat if the aircraft were forced to land on water. After World War I, he and his son Gaston anticipated the boom in commercial aviationand designed the Aviette a 28-kilo bag designed to carry "two suits, on overcoat, three undergarments three vests, ten daytime shirts, three nightshirts, six pairs of socks, 12 handkerchiefs, a pair of shoes, two hats, 18 shirt collars, ties, gloves and other items, all in specific compartments."
Jean and pierre Vuitton, the twin grandsons of Louis vuitton, built a
helicopter in a workshop on the family estate when they were just 18.
They exhidited a full-scale model of the aircraft at the 1909 Air show
in the Grand Palais in Paris.
Unfortunately a test flight on November 18, 1909 was unsuccessful.
Undaunted, the brothers immediately mode a reduced-size version
that they succeeded in flying. this encouraged them to build the vuitton // and the more powerful vuitton /// version to be displayed of the 1910 Air Show, along with a full scale model of an airplane.
The vuitton plane had a propeller three meters in diameter, with Technical details that would later become prevalent in the industry
such as raised wingtips, vertical ailerons and a variable geometry wing.
The twins' older brother Gaston-Louis worked for the photography
unit of the air force, adjusting cameras gor aerial photography missons.
Georges Vuitton passed away in 1936 and Gaston-Louis,
his closest collaborator, took over as head of the family enterpries.
A man of taste with a talent for anticipation - an essential skill to
meet the needs of avid air travelers - he was regularly in contact with
leaders in the nascent aviation industry.
French air transport minister Maurice Bokanowski personally invited
him to be among the VIPs on hand to welcome Charles lindbergh at
Le Bourget airport in May 1927 after his historic solo flight across
the Atlantic.
A few days before leaving paris, the American pilot purchased two
garment carriers from Vuitton. Gaston-Louis was also a guest at
the cereminy at Le Bourget airport that marked the creation of the
new airline Air France.
It would hardly be a stretch of the imagination to thisk that the Vuittons family, with their intimate relationship with the art of
travel and comfort, be it by air, land or sea, might one day
create luggage designed specially for tomorrow's space travelers.
