Soccer balls from 50 years ago looked different from theose we use today. Frist, they were made from fewer pieces of material. Back then they were made of eight to ten pieces stitched together with thick string. today, most soccer balls are mede of 32 pieces sewn together with 642 stitches. Second, they were usually made from leather. Today, we generally use man-made materials.
FIFA, which organizes world cup events, tests new soccer balls made by centain companies, like Nike and Adidas. The FIFA test is very strict; more than 70% of the balls tested do no pass! It measures things like shape, weight, presure, and water-resistance. There are many parts to the testm but one part is especially hard. Each ball is shot from a machine at 50KM/h toward a steel wall - two thousand times! Many balls break apart during this part of the test.
Interestingly, soccer balls in the future may look more like those from long ago. It is not by returning to leather. Leather will never again be popilar for making soccer balls because it is very easy for water to soak through the inside of the ball. Rather, sports companies are again making balls from six to twelve pieces of material. Why? the answer is water. Water is still one of the main reasons that soccer balls fail the FIFA test. Scientists think that fewe pieces of material will mean fewer stitches, and therefore fewer places for water to enter the ball. som the soccer ball that your children play with may look sililar to the one your grandparents kiched around.
