 The New York Times wrote in 1926 of Hemingway's first novel,

 "No amount of analysis can convey the quality of The Sun Also Rises. It is a truly gripping story, told in a lean, hard, athletic narrative prose that puts more literary English to shame." The Sun Also Rises is written in spare, tight prose that influenced countless crime and pulp fiction novels and made Hemingway famous. In 1954, when Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, it was for "his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style."Paul Smith writes that Hemingway's first stories, collected as In Our Time, showed he was still experimenting with his writing style. He avoided complicated syntax. About 70 percent of the sentences are simple sentences—a childlike syntax without subordination.

" 아무리 많은 분석을 한다한들 소설<태양은 또다시 떠오른다>의 우수성을 옮길수 없을 것이다.이 소설은  깔끔하고, 강렬하며, 발랄한 산문을 이야기하듯 전달하는  재미있는 이야기다. 문학에 사용된 어떤 영어도 이에 못미칠 것이다. 소설 <태양은 또다시 떠오른다>는 인색할만큼 간결하고, 빡빡한 산문체로 쓰여졌는데 그것으로 범죄소설과 싸구려 통속소설에 셀수도 없을 만큼 영향을 끼쳤으며 헤밍웨이를 유명하게 만들었다. 1954년 헤밍웨이가 노벨문학상을 수상했을때 수상이유는 가장 최근에 나온 소설< 노인과바다>에서 보여준 이야기체 기법의 완성 과 당대의 문체에 그가 끼친 영향 때문이었다.  폴 스미스는 <인아워타임>에 수록된 헤밍웨이의 초기 소설들에서 헤밍웨이는 여전히 그의 문체를 실험하고 있었으며, 복잡한 문장구조를 꺼려했다고 쓰고 있다. 문장의 70퍼센트가량이 종속절이 없는 유아적문장체인 단문형태이다.
