 Terrorism seeks to bring about social or political changes through the generation of fear. This fear is usually used to weaken the power and influence of the status quo. Although the modern concept of terrorism has been around since the late 19th century, the sheer scale of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States sent shock waves of fear across the entire world.
테러는 공포을 발생으로 정치적 사회적 변화를 추구한다. 이 공포는 현상유지의 힘과 영향이 약화될 때 주로 이용된다. 테러리즘의 현대적 개념은 19세기 후반 경부터 이루어졌으며, 미국에서 2001년9월11일 테러공격의 난데없는 규모는 전 세계에 걸쳐 충격파를 던졌다.
 
Terrorism has existed throughout history. Groups that have been alienated because of religious persecution, political oppression, economic exploitation, cultural domination, ethnic discrimination, or any combination of these usually perpetrate it. In some cases, extremists who believe that their faith is the one true religion have turned to terrorism. Sometimes, terrorist acts are committed by people who feel that their rights are being denied or that they have no legal outlets. Modern terrorism is often incited by the wide disparities in wealth we see throughout the world.
테러리즘은 역사에 꾸준히 존재해왔다. 종교적 박해, 정치적 억압, 경제적 착취, 문화적 지배, 민족차별, 윤리적 차별 또는 이들의 복합적인 것들로 인한 소외집단이 보통 그런한 일들을 저지른다. 때로는, 테러리스트들의 행동은 그들의 권리가 거부되고 있다고 느끼거나 법적인 탈출구가 없다고 느낄 때 자행되고 있다. 현대적 테러리즘은 전 세계에 걸쳐 우리가 볼 수 있는 부의 불균형에 의해 종종 선동되고 있다.

The september 11th terrorist attacks were extreme, but they serve as a prime example of the increasing deadliness of modern terrorism. Terrorism is not made up of __________ acts of violence. Each attack is planned carefully as a means to a specific end. Targets are meticulously chosen, often selected to maximize fear by taking the lives of innocent civilians. These efforts are coordinated with great precision, all in the interest of creating fear and gaining media attention. And as terrorist groups seek international attention in today's  globalized society, they've been progressively escalating their attacks in order to achieve this aim.
9월11일 테러는 극단적이었지만, 현대 테러리즘의 치명적인 증가의 대표적인 사례를 보여준다. 테러리즘은 폭력행위로만이 이루어지즌 것은 아니다.  각 공격은 특정목적을 달성하기 위한 수단으로 주도면밀하게 계획되고 있다. 목적은 무고한 시민들의 생명을 취함으로써 공포의 극대화를 치밀하게 선택하고 자주 이용한다. 이러한 노력은 모든 공포를 조장하고 언론의 주목을 받기 위해 치밀하게 조종된다. 그리고 테러집단이 오늘날의 글로벌한 사회에서 주목받기 위해서, 이들 목적을 달성하기 위해 그들의 공격을 점진적으로 확대시켜나간다.
 
Although the most obvious effect of terrorism is the loss of human life, it also has the potential to strike and economic blow. Property damage and subsequent insurance claims after an attack often add up to enormous amounts. The financial world can be disrupted by fear, sometimes even causing stock markets to crash. Because of this, terrorism has the potential to stunt economic growth, or perhaps even to collapse a national economy. And as terrorism steps up to a global scale, it is the global economy that is affected.
 테러리즘의 가장 명백한 효과는 인간생명의 손실이지만, 파업과 경제적 타격을 잠재적으로 갖고 있다. 재산피해와 지속적인 보험은 공격을 엄청난 양으로 퍼부은 후에 요구한다.
금융세계는 공포로 붕괴되고, 때로는 주식시장이 무너지기도 한다. 이런 것들 때문에, 테러리즘은 경제성장을 저해하는 잠재성을 갖고 있고 아마도 국가경제에 까지도 붕괴시키기도 한다. 그리고 세계적 규모의 테러리즘 단계는 세계경제에까지 영향을 미친다.

 

 If modern terrorism is to be prevented, its causes must be understood. Whatever the underlying motivations of terrorist groups are, there is no excuse for vicious actions that affect innocent civilians.
만약 현대 테러리즘을 방지하려면, 그 원인을 알아야 한다. 테러단체의 기본동기가 무엇이든간에, 무고한 시민들에게 영향을 미칠 수 있는 악순환의 원인은 제거되어야만 한다.
