There was once a kind man. his name was Oliver Goldsmith. He wrote many interesting books. He had a gentle heart. He was always ready to help others. he gave so much to the poor that he was always poor himself.
People sometimes called him Doctor Goldsmith because he had gone to medical school. One day a poor woman visited Doctor Goldsmith. She asked him to go and see her husband. She said her husband was very sick and could not eat. Goldsmith went to their house. He found that the family was in great need.
The woman's husband had not worked for a long time. There was no food to eat in the house. He was not sick, but distressed. He was very worried about his family. He was also very weak because he was not eating.
Goldsmith said to the woman, "Come to my house this evening. I will give you some medicine for y our husband." The woman came to his house. Goldsmith gave her a box that was very heavy.
"Here is the medicine," Goldsmith said. "Use it all. Soon your husband will be strong again. Bur do not open the box until you get home." " What are the directions for taking the medicine?" asked the woman.
"You will find them in the box," he answered. When the woman reached her home, she went to her husband. Together they opened the box. It was full of money. On the top were the directions. They said, " To be taken as often as necessary." Goldsmith had given them all of his money.
