Books Live

Books live. Books endure and prevail. "The strongest memory is weaker than the palest ink," says a Chinese proverb. Anatole Broyard tells us, "A good book is never exhausted. It goes on whispering to you from the wall."

Not long ago, a woman telephoned an Atlanta library and asked, "Can you please tell me where Scarlett O'Hara is buried?"

The librarian explained, "Scarlett O'Hara is a fictional character in Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind." "Never mind that," said the caller. "I want to know where she's buried." For that reader, Scarlett O'Hara had been so alive that she was dead.

Even the men with the greatest minds die when the time comes, but books never do. We read their writings and share their feelings and ideas. As a poet pointed out, as soon as books come into being, the words within them live on.

     A word is dead

     When it is said,

     Some say.

     I say it just

     Begins to live

     That day.

That is the power we experience whenever we encounter a good book.

Books Move

Books move. Books do not sit still. In many countries, there are mobile libraries that take books from place to place. The first bookmobile in the United States which was a horse-drawn wagon, began making its rounds in Maryland in 1905. But the first bookmobile in history was, perhaps, the property of the Dutch humanist writer Desiderius Erasumus. Erasmus had few personal possessions outside of his books, and he declared: "When I get a little money,  I buy books, and if any is left, I buy food and clothes. My luggage is my library. My home is where my books are." No surprise then that in Erasmus's caravan during his travels throughout sixteenth-century Europe, one donkey was reserved exclusively to carry his books.0star

Books are not just inert objects to be used for a brief while and returned to shelf. Like Erasmus, ture booklovers carry their libraries around with them wherever they go. On the other hand, Emily Dickinson went on expeditions everywhere with books while she stayed at home. She knew that books travel two ways and thus they also take us on journeys with them.

     There is no Frigate like a Book

     To take us Lands away

     Nor any Coursers like a page

     Of prancing Poetry-

     This Traverse may the poorest take

     Without oppress of Toll-

     How frugal is the Chariot

     That bears the Human soul.
