This is "The Arnolfini Marriage." It was painted by a Dutch painter in 1434. The couple are
holding hands in their bedroom. The man is taking a vow. Look at the lamp. There is only one
candle. It means that a man and a woman are one person in marriage.
The artist has painted everything in great detail. You can see a bed, an armchair and some
wooden shoes. And can you see the oranges? They show that this is a rich family. Do you know
why? Only rich people could get oranges Think were oranges grow! Look carefully at the picture.
Do you see the man in blue? He is Jan Van Eyck, the painter.
It is one of the most important paintings in Europe. It was the first full-size portrait in European
painting. And also, it is not a religious work. Before it was painted in 1434, all paintings were
religious. And what's more, the couple are not a king or a queen, but a merchant and his wife.
This picture was painted by pablo Picasso. He painted a mother who is looking at her child. Her
strong arms are holding her child. In the background picasso painted the three things that make
up the world. They are the land, the sea and the sky. what did picasso want to tell you in this
picture? Look at the picture with your eyes and, also, with your heart.
