Yong Taylor has been a stylist at Studio One Hair Design for eight years.
Editor's note: The Slice of Life feature will be written by Hood College journalism students throughout the month.
Yong Taylor joined Studio One Hair Design eight years ago after a brief stint at JCPenney.
A South Korea native, Taylor, 45, was born in Gwanju, one of the oldest cities in South Korea. She started experimenting with hairstyles at a young age on family members ranging from cousins to her own sisters. She graduated from Cosmopolitan Cosmetology School in Annandale, Va., in 1997.
"Ever since I was a teen, I wanted to do hair," she said. "I did hair on family members, friends, cousins. I just like the arrangement and hairstyles."
Her conservative father did not support her dream to be a hairstylist because he believed her gender did not qualify her for a professional career.
"In Korean culture, at the time, women working was not accepted, and he did not approve at all," she said.
Taylor was not to be denied. She met and fell in love with an American man, Thomas Taylor. Following their marriage, she immigrated to the United States. She has lived in Frederick since 1990. "I consider it my second hometown," she said.
She emphasizes relationships with her customers.
"My customers are more like family," Taylor said. "If I know them for a long time, then the relationship is friendlier. Our interactions are more than just professional, but personal. I have offered or been offered advice about life, family, and how to raise my two daughters."
The feelings are mutual as customers expressed their own level of satisfaction with her services.
"I love her services," said Marlene Resinger, 62, a regular client.
"I used to live on Fairview Avenue and was looking to change hairdressers. When I came to Studio One, they set me up with Yong, and I have been with her ever since."
Resinger said she recommended Taylor to her sister who had a facial, and to a friend who now comes monthly for a haircut and coloring.
Taylor is becoming known for her personality and dedication to her customers.
"I have built up connections with clients who faithfully come to my store," she said. "There is a strong relationship with my clients, and the loyalty of clients is very, very important to me."
Taylor does not plan to open a store of her own. She said she loves styling hair, not managing accounting books. "I'm not going to open my shop, it will prevent me from enjoying the work due to the stress of business management."
Taylor has two children, Hannah, 19 and Nina, 16. She said she is slightly challenged on cultural boundaries when it comes to raising her daughters. Being far away from her own family, all of whom are in Korea, she feels nostalgic about her native country.
A fair share of challenges and disappointments has not helped matters either. Her father died last year, and her mother died recently.
Despite the difficulties, Taylor has made a home for herself in Frederick and has no intention of leaving the town anytime soon. Her affinity for hairstyling and her job at Studio One has provided her with a level of attachment to the city.
"Even though I have extreme stress at times, touching a client's hair helps, and they are very encouraging," she said.
