A study released in the fall of 2000 in the United States by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) raises fears that it may be unsafe to fly on commercial airliners that are more than 20 years old. An FAA task force subjected six aircraft that had been flown for more than 20 years by major commercial airlines to a complete test of the onboard wiring.
The task force found that for every 250 feet of insulated wire, there was at least one crack in the wiring's insulation, exposing the bare wire to the external environment.
Some large aircraft have at least 150 miles of wiring, according to the aircraft manufacturers.
That means there could be, on average, 3,100 cracks in the wiring of an old aircraft.
Even smaller, narrow-bodied aircraft could have, on average, about 400 cracks.
The tests were performed on standard aircraft produced by a variety of different aircraft manufacturers, which had been in commercial flight service for more than 20 years: futhermore, the tests were performed within six months of each aircraft's retirement from service.
The jets tested were a Lockheed L-1011, an Airbus A300, a Boeing 747, two DC-9s, and on DC-10.
Various spokesmen for the FAA and U.S. Congress said that, based on the report, the American flying public should be very concerned about air safety when traveling in older aircrafr.
