The Ig Nobel Prizes: Laughing and Thinking
Have you heard of the Ig Nobel Prizes? They are awarded to imaginative scientists whose research “First makes people laugh and then think.” The prizes were established in 1991 by a science humor magazine to introduce science in a fun way. Every October, ten prizes are presented by Nobel Prize winners at Harvard University. Research projects that have won Ig Nobel Prizes are real, serious scientific work, although they sound very funny when you first hear about them. Here are some of the most interesting projects that have received the prizes so far.
The Prize for Bird Science
Woodpeckers hit their heads against trees 12,000 times a day, but they don’t get headaches. How is this possible? An American scientist, Ivan Schwab, found the answer. Woodpeckers’ brains are protected by spongy bone that can reduce the shock from hitting their heads. Dr. Schwab also found why woodpeckers’ eyes do not pop out. They have special eyelids that close a millisecond before each hit.
The Prize for Peace
A British man, Howard Stapleton, invented a device that produces special sounds. These sounds can be heard only by teenagers and not by adults. The device was named the Mosquito because it sounds similar to the buzz of a mosquito.
Some shop owners in England found the Mosquito very useful. It could drive away teenagers who were hanging out late around their shops. Once the device was on, teenagers covered their ears and ran away from the shops, but people over the age of 30 could not hear the sounds at all.
The Prize for Chemistry
Do you like vanilla-flavored ice cream? What if the flavor were made from cow droppings? Mayu Yamamoto, a Japanese scientist, invented a way to make vanilla flavor from cow droppings. An ice cream shop near Harvard University made ice cream with this flavor and served it at the 2007 Ig Nobel Prize ceremony. Everyone at the ceremony had to try it.
What do you think about the scientific work introduced above? Science doesn’t always have to be so serious, does it?
