about 6,000 years ago, people usually hunted for their food. For the natives of North America's Northwest plains, this meant hunting buffalo. But, how did these Native Americans kill such large, strong animals with only primitive woodin spers? The answer lies at a place called "Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump"
"Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump" is a 10 meter high cliff in Alberta, Canada. Some years ago, scientists discoverd old tools and Buffalo bones buried at its base. As they dug, they were surprised to find incredible amounts of these atifacts nearly 11 meters deep!
Scientists soon figured out that this place was the site of ancient buffalo hunts. Hunters would run after giant herds of buffalo, push them across the plaints, and trap them on a steep cliff. Here the buffalo had nowhere else to go, and the hunters would chase them off the edge. Other hunters waited below to slaughter the animals.
In 1981, UNESCO named "Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump" a World Heritage Site. Its name might sound a bit silly, but it is a seriously important part of human history.
