I ( 주) don't expect(동) us(목) to(목보).
to는 앞에 나온 문장의 to부정사구문을 대신하는 대부정사로 목보 역할을 합니다.
(b) infinitive clause 생략(대부정사;pro-infinitive)
(i) 문맥상 의미가 통할 경우 to부정사로 시작하는 어구를 반복하는 대신 to만 사용가능
- We can use 'to' instead of a clause beginning with 'to-infinitive‘ when it is clear from the context what we are talking about:
[] I wanted to [come with you], but I won't be able to.(3G65A)
(ii) 뒤에 to부정사가 따르는 명사/형용사 뒤나 일부 동사 뒤의 to도 생략 가능
- After most nouns and adjectives or some verbs, we can leave out to-infinitive.
[] I'm not going to [write another book]-at least I don't have any plans (to).(3G65B)
[] Robert [will call us by 10 o'clock]. He promised (to).(to call...)(")
(iii) 보어(동사의 의미를 확실하게 하는 단어/구)를 필요로 하는 동사는 to 생략 불가
- After verb which must have a complement, we can't leave out to-infinitive.
[] I admit [that I took her watch], but I didn’t mean to.(3G65B)
[] It [worked] just [as it was intended to].(2AC226)
[] I [did it] because he told me to (do it).
(iv) if절이나 wh-절의 want 와 would like 뒤의 to는 생략 가능
[] You’re welcome [to dance] if you’d like (to).(3G65C)
[] You can [do whatever] you would like (to).(")
[] [Come and see us] when you want (to). [Call me Fred] if you want (to).(“)
(v) if- 절이나 wh- 절이 아닌 다른 절에서는 to 생략 불가
[] I was planning [to see you tomorrow], and I would still like to.(3G65C)
(vi) if절이나 wh- 절의 like 다음에는 일반적으로 to 생략:
[] Leave whenever you like. v. Leave whenever you’d like (to).(3G65C)
[] You can have one if you like. v. You can have one if you’d like (to).(“)
(vii) 그러나 부정문의 want, would like, like 다음에는 to 생략 불가
[] "Shall we [go and visit Julio]?" "I don’t really want to."(3G65C)
[] "He won’t [mind you asking him for a loan]" "Oh, no, I wouldn’t like to."(“)'
