Leroy Brown, also known as Encyclopedia Brown, is a boy detective.
Encyclopedia Brown이라고도 알려진 Leroy Brown은 소년 탐정이다.

Encyclopedia was reading about diamonds
Encyclopedia가 다이아몬드에 관한 책을 읽고 있었을 때,

when his father, Chief Brown, entered his room.

“Do you know that diamonds are so hard that they’re used to cut stone?”

He said, “Mr. Goldman, the jeweler, had a diamond necklace stolen.”

Chief Brown and Encyclopedia went to see Mr. Goldman in his store.

Mr. Goldman seemed very upset.

“The stolen diamond necklace is insured for five million dollars,

Chief Brown pointed at the necklace on Mr. Goldman’s desk and said,

Mr. Goldman said, “That is a copy of the stolen diamond necklace.
Goldman 씨는 말했다. “저것은 도난당한 다이아몬드 목걸이의 모조품이에요.

It’s made of glass.
유리로 만들어졌죠.

At night, the two necklaces are kept together in the safe on the second floor.”
밤에는 그 두 개의 목걸이가 2층 금고 안에 같이 보관됩니다.”

Mr. Goldman stood up. “Let me show you how it happened.”
Goldman 씨는 일어났다. “사건이 어떻게 발생했는지 보여 드릴게요.”

From the office, Mr. Goldman led the way into the hall.
Goldman씨는 사무실에서 복도 쪽으로 앞장섰다.

The hallway floor was made of stone.
 복도 바닥은 돌로 되어 있었다.

Mr. Goldman climbed the stairs.
Goldman씨는 계단을 올라갔다.

At the top, he turned around and said,
꼭대기에서, 그는 뒤로 돌더니 말했다.

“Shortly after 10 o’clock,
“10시 바로 직후에,

I was bringing the glass necklace downstairs for display.”

He pretended he was carrying the glass necklace

and started down the stairs.

“Suddenly, two masked men appeared and attacked me.

One of them took the glass necklace and threw it to the floor.
그 중 한 명이 유리 목걸이를 빼앗겨 바닥에 던졌어요.

And the other forced me back to the safe.
그리고 다른 한명은 저를 강제로 금고 쪽으로 되돌아가게 했어요.

I was made to give him the real diamond necklace.”
저는 그에게 진짜 다이아몬드 목걸이를 내줄 수밖에 없었어요.”

“Who knows about the glass copy other than you?” asked Chief Brown.
“당신 이외에 유리로 만든 모조품에 대해서 또 누가 알고 있습니까?”라고 Brown서장은 물었다.

“My store manager, Mr. Evans,” said Mr. Goldman.
“저희 가게 책임자인 Evans 씨가 알고 있습니다.”라고 Goldman씨는 말했다.

“But he has been with me for 20 years.
“하지만, 그는 20년 동안 저와 함께 일해 왔습니다.

I trust him completely.”
저는 그를 완전히 신뢰하고 있습니다.” 

Chief Brown turned to Encyclopedia.
Brown 서장이 Encyclopedia쪽으로 고개를 돌렸다.

Encyclopedia smiled and said,  “Gee, Dad, the thief is right here.”
Encyclopedia는 웃으며 말했다. “저런, 아빠, 도둑은 바로 여기 있어요.”

여러분은 누가 다이아몬드 목걸이를 훔쳤는지 아나요?

Mr. Goldman planned the whole thing.
Goldman 씨가 모든 일을 계획했다.

He hired the masked men to rob him of the glass necklace.
그는 복면을 한 남자들을 고용하여 그에게서 유리목걸이를 빼앗게 했다.

Remember one of the masked men threw the necklace away?
 복면을 한 남자들 중 한명이 그 목걸이를 던졌다는 것을 기억하는가?

If it had been glass, it would have broken on the stone floor,
만약 그것이 유리였다면, 돌로 된 바닥에 부딪혀서 깨졌어야 하는데,

but the glass copy on Mr. Goldman’s desk wasn’t broken.
Goldman 씨의 책상 위에 있는 유리 모조품은 깨지지 않았다.

So the necklace on his desk had to be the real diamond necklace.
따라서 그의 책상 위에 있던 목걸이가 진짜 다이아몬드 목걸이였음에 틀림없었다.

If Encyclopedia had not solved the case,
만약 Encyclopedia가 그 사건을 해결하지 못했다면,

Mr. Goldman would have kept the diamond necklace
Goldman씨는 다이아몬드 목걸이도 갖고,

and collected the five million dollars’ insurance money, too!
5백만 달러의 보험금까지 챙겼을 것이다!
