Hunter Greene (5-4, 3.70 ERA) is aiming for his sixth win of the season. Greene suffered a loss with a 4.2-inning, 1-run performance on the road at St. Louis on the 1st, primarily due to a lack of support from his lineup. Although his pitching hasn't been great at home this year, his 2.12 ERA in day games is something he can bank on. Cincinnati's lineup scored four runs, including a solo homer by Spencer Steer, against Olson and Foley in the previous game, but they couldn't replicate their road performance at home, resulting in a loss. In the bottom of the 9th, with a one-out, runner on third chance, Blake Dunn was thrown out at home, which was particularly painful considering Noelvi Marte then hit a single. The bullpen gave up just one run in 4.1 innings, and Brent Suter's ability to hold on for 3 innings was fortunate.

Detroit is in a rather difficult situation due to the lack of suitable pitchers to call up from AAA. In the previous game, Detroit’s lineup scored five runs with four home runs against Spiers and Suter, showing a recent pattern of inconsistent performance. Colt Keith, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs, is quickly finding his footing for a rookie player. However, giving up two runs in the ninth inning, closer Jason Foley nearly blew the save, continuing the trend associated with Detroit's relief pitchers.
Commentary
Three of Detroit's four home runs in the previous game were off breaking balls, indicating that it will be very challenging for them to handle Hunter Greene's fastballs. The key will be how well Cincinnati's lineup can exploit Detroit's bullpen day, which historically has a low success rate. If Detroit calls up Matt Manning from AAA to start, it would be almost suicidal due to the two-day rest. With better starting pitching, the Cincinnati Reds are closer to victory.
