Seattle

Emerson Hancock (3 wins, 3 losses, 4.79 ERA) is making his return to the Major League. After a strong performance in his injury comeback game against the White Sox at home on June 14, where he pitched 7 innings allowing 2 runs, he was immediately sent down to AAA due to a lack of opportunities. Although he has a strong record at home with a 2.89 ERA, the key issue will be how he addresses his weakness in daytime games. Seattle's lineup, which managed to score 2 runs against Gausman in the previous game, still finds it difficult to be considered strong in home games. The team seems to struggle unless they hit home runs. The bullpen, which pitched 2.1 innings in the last game, faces a handicap in that they cannot use their top three relievers in this game.

Toronto

Yariel Rodriguez (3 losses, 4.63 ERA) is attempting his first win again. Despite a strong performance of 6.2 innings, 2 hits, and 1 run in a home game against Houston on the 2nd, Rodriguez took a loss. He can take comfort in the fact that it was his best pitching since debuting. His performance on the road hasn't been good overall this season, but he has been strong in daytime games with a 1.74 ERA and a .171 batting average allowed. In the previous game, Toronto's lineup only managed 1 solo home run by Kevin Kiermaier in the top of the 6th inning against Luis Castillo, producing just two hits overall and indicating a struggle from the start. Being stifled by Castillo likely means they will have a tough time throughout the series. Fortunately, the bullpen managed to pitch 2 scoreless innings.

Comment

Seattle's hitting at home still can't be considered strong. Rodriguez, who excels in daytime games, won't be easy to target. However, Hancock is also a strong pitcher at home, and given the hitting struggles from the previous game, Toronto's lineup won't find it easy to come alive. Ultimately, it will come down to the bullpen battle. Seattle can't use their top relievers in this game, but Toronto's bullpen is very weak, and this will likely make the difference. The Seattle Mariners, leading in the later innings, are closer to a victory.
