THE SECRET GARDEN
When the two returned, Ben loosened the plant from its pot and handed it to Colin. "Here, lad, Set it in the earth, same as a king does when he visits a new place."
Colin's hands shook a little as he set the rose plant into the ground and held it upright as Ben patted the earth around it.
"It's planted!" said Colin. "Help me up. dick-on. I want to be standing when the sun goes down on this wonderful, magical day."
And whether it was magic or Mary's prayers or Dickon's strength, when the sun slipped down over the horizon, Colin was standing on his two feet--laughing and crying at the same time.
"There's magic here--good magic! whis-pered Colin.
And Mary wondered if that magic might have had something to do with Colin;s mother watching over him from heaven.

PLAY-Acting
The idea of magic kept Colin awake most of that nigh, thinking and planning. To him, toe best magic was that he had really stood on his feet. As he told Mary and Dickon and Ben in the garden the following day, "I'm convinced that if you tell yourself 'Nice things are Going to happen' and you really believe it, magic will happen' Mary and Dickon believed I could stand up, and I came to believe it too. "Then he'll be proud to look at me, proud that he's got a son who's as straight and as strong as any other father's son But we must be certain that the servants don't suspect any-thing. I'll still act like a weak invalid in the house and come here every day in my wheel-chair. That should work."
Throughout the months ahead, the magic continued for the children. Magic in the roses coming alive. Magic in the new blooms each day. Magic in the animal stories Dickon told them. And even magic in the children's play-acting.
