Korea-Japan trade deficit is $24 billion
A chronic trade imbalance with Japan is a major factor in Korea's shrinking current account surplus, a report said yesterday. Korea recorded a current account deficit of $268 million in the first half of the year for the first time in nine years on a widening service account deficit and reduced exports.
According to the report by the Hyundai Research Institute, the country's current account surplus shrunk $8.8 billion in the first six months of the year compared with a year earlier.
The trade deficit with Japan reached $24.3 billion last year following $24.4 billion the previous year, according to the institute.

Apples patrolled around-the-clock
Passersby have been stealing apples from the trees along the Cheonggye Stream, so the Seoul city government has begun round-the-clock patrols to watch the trees.
Between Gosanja Bridge and Sindapcheol Bridge on the lower courses of the stream are 116 apple trees donated by the city government of Chungju, North Chungcheong province. In June, the trees were bearing 2,500 apples, thanks to city workers who wrapped each one in vinyl to prevent them from being eaten by insects. However, even before the apples became fully ripe, residents started picking them. About 500 went in two months.
Consequently, city officials and volunteers began patrolling. They also set up sign boards with a public appeal: "Protect apple trees."
Last October, the city announced an apple-picking event, but only 20 were left. The city government had to bring apples from Chungju to hand

Archery event comes back
The International Archery Federation selected South Korea over the weekend to host the 2009 Archery World Cup, officials at the Korea Archery Association said yesterday.
The city of Ulsan, South Gyeongsang province, is the likely venue for the event, which was last held here in 1985.
At the time, Korea won the gold medal in the men's team competition and the silver medal in the women's team competition. It has managed since to stay in the upper echelons of the sport.
Officials at the association said yesterday that they plan to use the event to gauge new trends in archery and to maintain the country's dominance in the sport.
