There 삽입 (There-Insertion)

there를 삽입하여 소개문을 만드는 구문 변형

변형(Trnasformation): 주어 자리에 there를 넣고 진주어/실질주어를 동사 다음에 옮긴다,

주어=실제/진주어 부분을 문장의 뒤로 보내고 그 자리에 there를 놓는다.

영어 통사론에서 이것을 후치한다고 한다. (there 유도부사/문법상의 주어)

⑴ 주어가 비한정명사구일 경우에만 가능하다.

※ the/this/that이 붙거나 고유명사 등으로 확실하게 정해진 것이 한정(definite) 명사구이고 a/some/any/no/무관사 등이 붙은 명사구가 비한정명사구이다.

⑵ 존재나 발생 등을 나타내는 동사들의 경우에만 가능하다 (be, stand, lie, live, remain, appear, arise, come, occur, ensue 등)

Q:

1. There was a gas station by the road 3 years ago.

2. A gas station was by the road 3 years ago.

위 두 문장은 문법만 다르고 같은 의미로 해석 될 수 있지 않나요? (O)

그러나 1이 더 자연스러워 보인다,

혹시 같은 의미로 해석이 가능하다면, There + be동사 문법이 필요한 명확한 이유는 무엇인가요?

먼저 존재한다는 사실을 말하고 뒤에서 그 존재하는 대상을 표현함으로서 관심을 모을 수 있습니다,

Once upon a time there lived a man and his wife in a distant village. 이런 식으로

단순히 존재나 발생의 대상이 되는 것이 주어 자리를 차지한다는 것이 적절하지 않는 면이 있죠,

즉 주어로서 자격이 조금 미흡하다는 것, 의미상 오히려 목적어 비슷한 면이 있다는 것

이 구문이 가능한 동사들의 경우 명사구가 의미상 하는 역할, 즉 의미역(Semantic Role)이 [행위자]가 아니고 [대상] 역할을 한다는 것이다,
