It is first necessary to make an endeavor to become interested in whatever it has seemed worthwhile to read. The student should try earnestly to discover wherein others have found it good. Every reader is at liberty to like or to dislike even a masterpiece; but he is not in a position even to have an opinion of it until he appreciates why it has been admired.

바로 앞에 나오는 masterpiece를 지칭하는 것으로 생각됩니다 :)

​

Every reader is at liberty to like or to dislike even a masterpiece;

모든 독자는 그것이 걸작이라 할 지라도 좋아하거나, 싫어할 자유를 가진다.

but he is not in a position even to have an opinion of it until he appreciates why it has been admired.

그러나 그 사람이 왜 그것(걸작)이 칭송받아 왔는가를 이해할 때 까지는 그것에 대한 의견을 가질 입장을 취할 수도 없다.
